Olympic Games In China Should Be Boycotted. And The Ones In Russia Cancelled.
March 16, 2008
Events in Tibet are a stark reminder that the Chinese communist regime is prepared to go to any lengths to cling to power. They will use force against anyone who is seen as challenging their authority. So what if another thousand or ten thousand or a hundred thousand are killed, arrested, sent to prison, executed? The important thing is that the great communist idea, implemented, supposedly, for the good of the Chinese people, is still on track.
And all that happening in a country which is hosting the 2008 Summer Olympic Games with its ideals of freedom, equality, friendship and blah-blah-blah.
Now I have a question: why on earth did the International Olympic Community chose China to host this year’s Olympics in the first place? What did actually influence the decision of the distinguished members of the committee? Call me cynic, but I bet it was because they had a really great time visiting China, stayed in the best hotels, dined in the most expensive restaurants, got all those lovely gifts and generally thoroughly enjoyed themselves. Oh yes, and because the big companies had quietly persuaded them – you know how persuasive these pesky multinationals can be! – that it would be a great idea to help China open up its markets to the rest of the world. And who cares about millions of Chinese people who rot in jails for their political or religious beliefs, or live in fear of being arrested for being seen as hostile to the great communist idea, or who work for practically nothing producing goods for export. These are all non-essential, irrelevant things. It’s the big picture that the guys and girls in the IOC had in mind.
The point is that the Olympic Games should have never been awarded to China. They are used by its rulers as a propaganda tool to fool their own people. Look, they say, the whole world accepts us as we are, so don’t you even think about objecting or protesting. We are here to stay.
Anyone who has any decency should boycott this year’s Olympics, be they athletes, tourists or businessmen. They should send a message to the creeps in Beijing that the game is up, so to speak, and they can no longer expect to get away with their nasty ways. Otherwise, it’s going to be just another farce with everyone pretending that there’s no big deal in appeasing one of the most ruthless and corrupt dictatorships in the world.
And once we’re on the subject of corrupt dictatorships and sports, I’d like to remind everyone that the 2014 Winter Olympic Games are going to take place in Russia. That was another brilliant decision taken by the IOC without any proper consideration. Let us examine the facts: the winter games have been awarded to Sochi, a famous holiday resort on the Black Sea known for its mild climate, lack of snow and total lack of any infrastructure needed to stage an international sporting event. Now what on earth could have persuaded the IOC to approve a city which is totally unsuitable for staging Winter Olympics? I guess it must have been the famous Russian hospitality and on the basis of information I got from Moscow I have a rough idea of how much it was worth; the hospitality that is.
But even if we ignore the small things, like choosing a totally unsuitable place to hold the Winter Olympics, there are other things to consider. Russia’s ruling regime stands accused of rigging parliamentary and presidential elections, trampling on human rights, allowing corruption to get out of control and wiping out political opposition. To top it all, the so-called preparation for the Olympics has already turned into a frenzied effort by the people close to the Kremlin to steal as much money as possible. My sources in Russia tell me that the bill for the games will reach $40 billion and that two thirds of the money is expected to disappear without trace. Oh, and another thing – the city, as predicted, won’t be ready for the games on time.
So here’s how I see it: if the Chinese games cannot be moved anywhere else simply because there’s no time left and the only decent thing left to do is to boycott them, the 2014 Winter Olympics in Russia can and should be cancelled. And moved somewhere else where there’s snow available. They aren’t called winter games for nothing, you know.
