Some People, It Seems, Take A Gloomy View Of Obama. In A Cynical Sort Of Way
January 19, 2009
A friend of mine called me from America. From outside Washington DC, to be exact. He is a Russian but has lived in the US of A for about 20 years. He the sort of man, who always springs surprises on you when you least expect them.
‘So how come you’ve stopped writing about Barack Obama on your website?’ he asked. ‘I thought you and your scribblers were not that keen on him winning?’
‘We just did it for fun,’ I explained. ‘Everyone was saying that he was going to win so we reckoned we’d look unusual if we say that he won’t. Made us stand out, if you know what I mean. Gave us a bit of novelty.’
My friends sighed.
‘Well,’ he said, ‘you might have been just fooling around, as all of you journalists do, but some of us here are bracing ourselves for some serious trouble once this guy, Obama, takes over.’
‘How’s that?’ I said. ‘I thought the whole country was rejoicing?’
‘It depends on what side of the fence you’re sitting,’ my friend said, rather gloomily, I thought. ‘It ain’t as straightforward as you may think. There are a lot of nuances and a lot of new faces in Washington that give us the creeps. This ain’t the time to have some left-wing idealists running things over here. We’ve got a crisis on our hands the size of China.’
I nodded.
‘We did write on our website that Obama got in at the wrong time,’ I said. ‘That he had actually lost by inheriting the country when it was going down. Would have been better for him, we said, if he got elected four years later.’
My friend produced something resembling a short laugh.
‘He would have no chance getting into the White House in four years’ time,’ he said. ‘By the time this crisis is over the Democrats would lose both the presidency and the congress. You do not come up with a plan for wealth redistribution when there is no wealth left. And Obama is all about wealth changing hands.’
‘You mean he is a socialist?’ I asked.
‘I mean he is a liberal surrounded by communists and eco-warriors and single issue nut-cases,’ my friend said. ‘He is bound to go with the flow.’
‘So would you have preferred Hillary Clinton to win?’ I asked. ‘She would not have allowed anyone to tell her what to do.’
‘No, no, no!’ my friend said, energetically. ‘No way would I have wanted that bitch to come back. You’ve got to be kidding me. She is worse than all of them…’
And he stopped, abruptly.
‘But she is the only chance we have now,’ he continued. ‘She’ll probably swallow that Obama whole, and won’t even burp.’
I thought that it was a rather strange logic on the part of my friend.
‘So are you saying that you would not have wanted to see Hillary win the presidential election but that you wish her luck in her job as Secretary of State in Obama’s Administration?’ I said. ‘Is that what you’re saying?’
My friend stayed silent for a moment.
‘Yep,’ he said finally. ‘I guess that’s what I’m saying. Good luck to her, and Bill.’
When we finished our conversation I pondered for a while about the strange ways that politics worked. How do they say: my enemy’s friend is my foe. And my foe’s enemy is my friend.
Cynical world we’re living in. Very cynical indeed.
