Letter From Obamaland: Some Think They Will Soon Be Living Under Communism

July 4, 2009

Obama Marx Martin McCauley reports from the United States: Some of the things one hears here in Wisconsin are almost unbelievable.

The state of Wisconsin is a paradise for teachers. They retire in their mid-50s with a pension of 110 per cent of final salary. Wow! We should all be teachers here. Teachers get an automatic salary rise every year to cover inflation so the state education bill keeps growing. It is practically impossible to sack teachers. If they are accused of sexual harassment they are suspended on full salary. It can take seven years before their case comes to a hearing. However Wisconsin is running out of money to pay its teachers. Part of the problem is that federal funding has been cut.

There are two solutions to this problem. Cut the working week to 35 hours and pay for only 35 hours. The other is, of course, to sack some teachers. The unions will not permit working hours to be cut. The school boards will not sack teachers because members were voted on to the boards with the help of the Parent Teacher Associations. Education finance is now in check mate in this state.
A friend who works in an engineering company is still in work. His company has no debts which is very rare anywhere in the business world. However the company has many subsidiaries and some of them have cut their labour force by 30 per cent and others by 50 per cent. The reason why my friend is still working is because he is in Research and Development (R & D). The company is using the slack period to upgrade its machinery and buy new technology. It hopes it will capture a larger market share when the upturn comes. Of course, if the upturn does not materialise within the next 12 months, R and D may be sacrificed as well. These are nervous times for everyone.

I have not encountered anyone who has a good word to say for Obama. Perhaps I am mixing with the wrong people! Everyone is afraid that taxes are going to rise and things will become very hard. I am told that if one wants to hear great things about Obama just go downtown and visit the African-American community. They think Obama is the Messiah. There is even talk of Obama providing everyone with a new car and a new home. People will not need to work anymore because the Messiah will provide all one’s needs.

Where have I encountered all this before? In the writings of Karl Marx. Marx said that socialism was the future of the world. Under socialism everyone would be compensated according to their input into society. Hence there would be inequality. However, there was paradise waiting over the horizon. It was called communism. Under this order everyone’s needs would be met. Marx had assumed that everyone would love work so much they would toil all day and produce all the goods which were needed for this new society.

Who would not want to live under communism? Just ask for some grapefruit and filet mignon steak and they would appear on one’s plate. Sorry folks, the bad news is that several countries tried to implement communism. What happened to them? They all collapsed. The main one was the Soviet Union.

Those who dream of living under communism in Obamaland are in for a rude shock. It is never never land. The belief in the coming dawn of communism has led the Right to dub Obama Karl Marx Junior. Is he going to suffer the same fate as the German 19th century prophet and be consigned to the rubbish bin of history?
