Will We Notice The End Of The World Happening? Fainthearted Should Not Read This

July 8, 2009

Sodom Adam Lovejoy writes: I often wonder whether we would notice end of the world happening?

We keep on waiting for some huge disaster to occur and wipe out our civilization, but in reality, if you think about it, the end of the world would probably have nothing to do with devastating earthquakes, colliding planets or massive floods. It would be all about the total collapse of the inner world of mankind, of morality and decency and respect for others and for true values. What would be the point of technological advancement if the people who would be benefitting from it would have no inner peace and no moral compass to guide them?

The end of the world would mark a stage when mankind gets most of its priorities in a twist and lives in a world of dangerous make belief. The difference between good and bad would become vague and gradually disappear. In fact, the concept of ‘good’ would get distorted to such an extent that ‘bad’ would replaces it. Like, for example, being promiscuous would become not just acceptable, but something to be proud of. Lying would become no big thing and using any methods to get what you want would be considered normal. Prostitution, by both men and women, would be seen as just another job and changing your views to suit your situation would be welcomed and promoted. Pursuing obscene wealth would be considered as something close to heroic and the super-rich would be treated as if they were gods. Ignorance would become more respectable than knowledge and people would actually flaunt their lack of intelligence, as if it was some outstanding achievement.

And this last development would spark a whole negative chain reaction, with bad taste and mediocrity triumphing across the board: in art, music, literature, sculpture, theatre, films, science and sport. Humour would become humourless and people would lose the ability to laugh at themselves.

But the most distinct symbol of the world ending would probably be virtual reality entering every single home: through television, computers and the Internet. I remember reading a 4th century writer who had predicted that one day every home and even every church in the land would have a ‘window into hell’. Well, we have this window now in many homes: a TV or a computer. Millions of people have already been sucked into this world and became imprisoned by it. They cannot tear themselves away from it. Their lives are controlled by virtual reality. They need a daily fix of it.

And what about sanity, or rather insanity? The end of the world would obviously be a crazy thing. And we already have a lot of it around: people who talk common sense are treated as lunatics while people who say absolute rubbish are considered wise and even profound. Politicians and public figures, who promote things that would have been ridiculed and scoffed only half a century ago, are considered great communicators and strong leaders. Absolute non-entities, inhibiting the virtual world of cinema and television and glossy magazines, become influential and are treated as role models.

And even the economy of the present seems to be reaching the end of the road. Middle men of all sorts, including bankers and lenders, have become kings and rule the business world. They decide what is worthwhile and what is not. These people, who create absolutely nothing, are considered everything. They are propped up by politicians, elected on false promises, who lie to their voters from the moment they get into positions of power. Constantly changing political views has become not just acceptable but advisable. Former PR man and failed lawyers flood into politics like cockroaches into a cracked garbage bin.

But the most remarkable aspect of the end of the world would probably be the inability of most people to actually see it coming or even happening. All that junk food and watching the box too much and spending hours in the virtual computer world made them unreceptive to the changes around them. Eternal optimism, the kind you see in TV commercials, seems to have taken its toll. Ignorance is always mixed with unfounded optimism. Pessimism is always shunned by simple souls as something unnerving and uncomfortable.

There is a painting of the final moments of Gomorrah. On the front of it you can see people partying in an orgy while in the background the burning lava has already engulfed part of the city and burnt it to a crisp. The lava is approaching, but the people on the front of the painting are blind to the danger. They are too busy enjoying themselves.

It does look a lot like the situation we are in now. Have we by chance missed the end already?

– End -
