Why Gordon Brown Has To Go. The Sooner The Better

Why Gordon Brown Has To Go. The Sooner The BetterAdam Lovejoy writes: There are at least two very strong reasons why Prime Minister Gordon Brown needs to step down. One relates to his handling of the financial crisis and the other has to do with the forthcoming national strike by the postal workers.First, the banking meltdown. I have one question to Mr Brown in this respect: how could it have happened that his government blew an absolute fortune on bailing out failed banks and yet has not bothered to strike a deal with the money men: we save you, but you, in turn, save the economy. Because what would have been the point of saving the banks with hundreds of billions of taxpayers’ money if it could have been pumped directly into the economy. The money was given to the banks on the pretext that it was crucial to save the banking system, as it is supposedly the main engine that powers our economy and contributes vast amounts in taxes to the public purse.

What a load of rubbish! The banking sector has contributed around 30 to 35 billion in taxes over the boom years but when it found itself in serious trouble it ‘devoured’ about 50 to 60 billion in the first six months of the crisis alone, and then went on to eat up several hundred more billion that would never be repaid any time soon, if at all. So the contributions that the money men have been making to the public purse in the past paled into insignificance compared to the debt that they have burdened the nation with for many years to come.

The scandal in all of this is obvious: instead of forcing the banks to accept strict conditions of their bail out, including an immediate resumption of lending, the government allowed them to grab the money and plug all the holes that they themselves had created. Not only that, but these very same bankers have had the nerve to use public money to pay themselves bonuses for their supposedly hard work.

Prime Minister Brown is directly responsible for what has happened. He is the man who should have saw to it that banks would have helped the economy to climb out of the recession. Instead, the money men have created even more problems by denying access to capital for many struggling businesses. For that alone Mr Brown should go. He failed miserably as Chancellor, but all his past failures are nothing compared to what he has done now: introducing shock therapy without actually delivering any of the benefits that such a drastic policy should bring.

But there is another reason why I think the Prime Minister should go as soon as possible. It was while he was Chancellor that the Royal Mail was gradually disintegrating, cutting services and shedding jobs. Mr Brown knew perfectly well what was happening, but kept quiet because the Royal Mail was providing him with the money to implement his idiotic social schemes. This was bound to explode at some point, and it did.

And now postal workers are going on strike. Two months before Christmas, at a time of recession when thousands of businesses dependent on postal deliveries are struggling to survive. And Brown and his government did nothing to prevent the strike from taking place, allowing the incompetent heads of the Royal Mail to make matters even worse.

There are two conditions that usually signal that a nation is slipping into anarchy: when taxes are collected below the 50 per cent level and when the national postal service collapses. So one condition in Britain is already in place, thanks to Brown&Co.

That is why he should go now, without delay. And a general election is called.
