A Passionate Defence Of The BBC. And Of Its Hard Working Executives

November 14, 2009

The BBC Is Playing The Impartiality Game: What A Farce It Is Turning Out To Be  Adam Lovejoy writes: I would like to voice my defence of the BBC and the wonderful and talented people who run it, including its Director General, Mark Thompson, and all of his deputies and senior executives.

A vicious campaign has been unleashed against these fine people by some sections of the media, accusing them of receiving huge salaries, as if they do not deliver for the money they are getting. So what if the top 37 BBC executives earn more than the British Prime Minister Gordon Brown. What has Mr Brown done for the country, compared to the tireless work that these people at the BBC carry out?

Just let me give you some examples of what the hard working executives at the BBC, earn so that you will understand better why I am so angry with hacks who are having a go at them for supposedly getting too much money. Mr Thompson, the DG I have already mentioned, a man I respect very much, earns a very modest salary of £664,000 and a measly bonus that brings his earnings to a very moderate £834,000. I’m sorry, but I don’t see any problem here at all. The man works very hard for his money. I actually think that he is underpaid rather than overpaid.

And what is the big deal about Mark Byford, the Deputy Director General of the BBC, earning £471,000 a year, which rises to a laughable £485,000 with bonuses? What is there to shout about? Just like there is nothing wrong with the charming Jana Bennet, Director of Vision, getting a very reasonable £412,000, rising to a very modest £515,000 with all her bonuses. And then there is Peter Salmon, Director of BBC North, with his modest £375,000 and £430,000 respectively, Zarin Patel, Chief Financial Officer, who gets only £346,000 and £430,000, and Caroline Thomson, Chief Operating Officer, who is paid just £333,000, rising to £413,000 with bonuses.

It gets much, much worse as you go down the ladder, with some BBC executives forced to exist on salaries of £170,000, £150,000 and even – wait for it – £98,000 and £76,300.

The money that these hard working people receive pales into insignificance when you think of the huge benefits that they give to the nation. First of all, without the BBC the wonderful Labour party would never have made it into government in 1997, and that would have meant that the nation would have never had that outstanding political genius, Tony Blair, as its leader, who has transformed this country beyond all recognition. In all the years that Mr Blair was in power the BBC was there behind him, explaining to the British people that Labour was the best option and that the opposition was hopeless and could only bring the country to its knees. And even now, when the Labour government and the current Prime Minister, Gordon Brown, are going through a difficult time, the faithful BBC continues to give them all the support and reassurance.

But there is another great service that the top executives who run the BBC provide to the British nation that very few people appreciate to a full extent. And that is creating the sort of programmes and shows that no one in their right minds would watch. Yes, ladies and gents, millions of people in Britain should be grateful to the BBC’s top executives for pushing them, yes, PUSHING them away from the box into the world of shopping, walks in the park, cinemas and libraries and meetings with friends in eateries. The BBC makes such low quality programmes that only people who are bored shitless would watch them. And that is the greatest achievement you can imagine and the greatest service that could be provided by a public broadcaster.

So I call on you people: please, stop bashing these wonderful professionals who run the BBC and make it what it is today.

– End –
