The Brave New World Of Adultery. In The Age Of Hi-Tech Communications
November 26, 2009
R.F.Wilson writes: Spare a thought for people who were forced to commit adultery in the days when mobile phones and the Internet were still non-existent and the outdated views on marriage were still hampering the desire of so many brave men and women to share their love and passion out of wedlock. It was not easy then. It was fraught with danger of being found out and suffering the consequences. But, thankfully, times have changed now. Nowadays illicit communications have become so much easier and views on marriage have been transformed and became much more flexible.
Take the many advantages of the Internet. People looking for extra-marital excitement can now browse the web in search of romance on the side and pretend to be anyone they want. They can even post images of other people, hoping that they would get away with it when it comes to crunch time. And once contact is established and intimacy achieved, they can move on and start looking for excitement someplace else. And the mobile phones opened up all sorts of possibilities when it comes to adultery. Persistent adulterers can have several mobiles to communicate with their love interests. No risk, no hassle, no need to explain to anyone who called and why. Illicit communications have become so much easier.
It was not like that twenty years ago. Keen adulterers then had to take risks and give their office or even home numbers to potential lovers and endure some serious dangers of being revealed. And there was no Internet then to make the search for adulterous affairs as easy as going out for a coffee.
The whole perception of loyalty in marriage was different in those days. Some people might be shocked to hear this, but marriage was then considered to be a good thing, not something you should avoid or be ashamed of as it is thought of now. Imagine how difficult it was for open minded easy going people trapped in their marriages in those days.
But thanks to the tireless work of governments, charities, feminists, the entertainment industry and the media marriage is no longer seen as cool now anymore. Even the words ‘husband’ and ‘wife’ have been successfully replaced by that wonderful term ‘partner’, making it easier for people who commit adultery to have fun on the side. In fact, bed hopping and having as many partners as possible has become not just acceptable but desirable. Emancipated women and open minded men are shagging silly, having no time anymore for marriage. Single parents are the preferred choice and governments go out of their way to make it financially more rewarding for people to stay out of marriage.
Books and films are also there to help adulterers or people who are only thinking of staying. No longer is adultery shunned upon. It is quite rightly portrayed as glamorous and exciting. Which probably explains why more and more men and women of all ages are so keen on jumping into the sack with perfect strangers at the first opportunity. Things are made even more convenient by speed dating, when people have an opportunity to have a quick shag during their lunch break.
Adultery has also been boosted by a welcome change of attitudes towards prostitution. No longer are prostitutes frowned at. They are called sex workers and are widely praised for their contribution to family life so that all adulterers who pay for sex, be it men or women, know that they are helping to keep their marriage intact.
As a result of all these progressive developments adultery in politics, as in changing your views and convictions, has become a much more regular occurrence as well. Gone are the bad old days when politicians had to stick to their colours through thick and thin. Now they can be pragmatic and flexible, sleeping outside their political marriage, so to speak, and making politics generally so much more exciting and fulfilling while less and less people see that as something bad or undesirable.
It was tough to be an adulterer in the bad old days. But thanks to progress things have become so much easier. We can only hope that science and a new brave outlook on life would provide more opportunities for decent adulterers, be it in family life or in politics.
