Setting The Record Straight On Religion And Democracy

December 27, 2009

Melanie Phillips I sometimes wonder whether some newspaper columnists in Britain actually know what they are writing about. Melanie Phillips, of the Daily Mail, is one of these scribblers who often takes on subjects that are simply above her level of expertise. She often creates an impression that she feels passionately about religion and faith and the moral high ground generally.

Unfortunately, religion is one of the subjects that are not really Ms Phillips’ strong point. There she was, writing in the Mail recently about the Archbishop of Canterbury, Rowan Williams, accusing the British government of making life difficult for Christians. It is a fair point in itself, but Ms Phillips has demonstrated serious ignorance of the subject. So I took the time to write to her and below I include the email that I sent her.

Dear Madam,

I was rather surprised to read in your latest column in the Mail the following statement: ‘And it was the Judo-Christian belief that all individuals are made equal in the image of God that gave rise to human rights and democracy.’

Nothing, madam, can be further from the truth. Judaism and Christianity have nothing to do with democracy and human rights, the products of pagan ancient Greece. Both Judaism and Christianity state that you have to be either a good slave or a good master, and treat others with respect and dignity, whatever your social position. The two religions have absolutely nothing to do with democracy and human rights that are now often used to suppress any debate about anything. (By the way, Plato, the godfather of democracy, is known to have ranked it lower than monarchy, stating: ‘Democracy always ends in tyranny.’)

The Left has always distorted the main ideas of Judaism and Christianity, treating them as the greatest threats to its dominance. That is why Tony Blair, an atheist and a dishonest man generally, has been playing the religious card all his political life. He is as about as religious as Stalin was a friend of the Jewish people. (Believe me, I know, my family went through the labour camps in Russia under Stalin.)

I strongly advise you not to fall into this trap that the Left has laid out. And always keep in mind the words of the great Russian writer, Fyodor Dostoevsky (Sigmund Freud learnt some of the chapters from his books by heart, by the way) who wrote: When Europe turned its back on God, it started to die spiritually.

Yours faithfully,
Alexander Nekrassov

Ms Phillips sent me a reply, but I’m obviously in no position to reveal it, as it was a private message. Still, I hope my correspondence gives you some idea of how politics and religion interact. Or rather, how they don’t interact at all.
