What Is It The Russian Mob Knows About Tony Blair That We Don’t?
May 16, 2011
Anton Goryunov writes from Moscow: I hear the Russian mob is puzzled by the way Tony Blair and his former sidekick, Alastair Campbell, are getting away with starting that dodgy war in Iraq, making money out of it by giving lectures, writing books and appearing on the box. Especially considering that only last week a former head of British intelligence revealed that Blair and Campbell have distorted reports on Iraq, to make it look as if Saddam Hussein possessed weapons of mass destruction to make a case for war stronger.
So I reckon Russian mobsters, who are practical people and like to know who can offer a good ‘roof’, i.e. protection, in these unpredictable times of ours, are probably wondering how is it that B & C are still at large, considering the weight of incriminating evidence against them. It was sort of obvious when the Labour government was in power and half of the cabinet was in cahoots with Tony and, indirectly, with t Alastair, who couldn’t be touched as he would have brought down his former boss with him. But now that the comrades are gone, the Russian mob, like many other sensible people, is asking: how is it that B & C are showing their mugs all over the place without fear of being nailed. This is the sort of protection that the mob would give an arm and a leg for. No wonder the Russian hoods are scratching their heads and playing the guessing game. Especially as so much of their money is hidden in Britain.
I hope you see the train of thought – lovely phrase that, ‘train of thought’, by the way – going through the Russian’s mob’s collective mind. It’s not that the Russian hoods have anything against Blair and Campbell, whom they actually admire for pulling of a job like that with Iraq. A trillion greens blown on a war started on the strength of a falsified document – that’s got to be respected by the underworld. What interests the mobsters is how the current protection arrangement works, and whether they can join the scheme.
When Russian hoods ask me about it, I tell them that Blair and Campbell probably struck a deal with the Attorney General and got immunity from prosecution, before they gave evidence to the inquiry on the war in Iraq . But the mobsters don’t buy that. They may be thugs, but they’re not stupid. They’ve got half of the Russian government eating from their hand. So they say to me that Blair and Campbell must be protected by the new Gov’nor himself, the PM that is. Otherwise, they say, both of them would be in the slammer by now.
Strange lot, these Russian mafia people. Know things things no one else does.
