When It Comes To The Economy Common Sense Seems Unpopular With The Coalition

R.F.Wilson writes from the City of London: When it comes to sorting out the mess in the British economy common sense seems to be very unpopular with the current coalition government. Everything it does actually makes things even worse. Chancellor George Osborne, who has produced a laughable autumn budget statement yesterday, doesn’t seem to realise that you can’t pump billions into banks that don’t lend properly and expect public spending cuts to help slash the budget deficit all on their own. Prime Minister David Cameron and his chums are missing one very simple but crucial point: you can’t get out of a recession by battling the nation’s debt while the economy is not growing. It’s a very simple formula really: when you have a budget deficit and a recession at the same time you...

Start Scamming To Beat Inflation

Mata Hurry writes from New Delhi: Let’s be clear: if you’re a regular law-abiding citizen you will be mauled by inflation and within a year or so you will be bankrupted by rising prices and high taxes. Inflation in India was in double digits last week and is expected to linger in high single or double digits in the months ahead. The Indian Finance Minister, Pranab Mukherjee blithely assures us that inflation will fall to 6 per cent levels in March. Trouble is he never defines the year when the inflation rate will supposedly fall. Especially as the GDP growth is sliding and the fiscal deficit is ballooning, thanks to profligate spending on boondoggle social security schemes by the government. Exports have slumped, the rupee is falling against the dollar and of course unemployment is rising....

The Rise And Fall Of An Irish George Soros

The Rise And Fall Of An Irish George Soros

Martin McCauley writes from Dublin: The Irish are dreamers and one of those who dreamed of becoming richer than George Soros has just bit the dust. Sean Quinn, a name you may have never heard of, rose to dizzying heights during the years when you did not need to ask for a loan. The bank manager came to you and begged you to accept a few million. Interest rates were lower than inflation so you could not lose. At least that was the story. The quickest way to become a millionaire was to borrow money, buy a property, sell it on and reinvest the capital. All of Ireland was at this game. It was painless. You did not need any qualifications to succeed. No need to study six years at university to understand the mysteries of finance and capital. The level of university teaching in the early 2000s was...

Pippa Breaks The Family Agreement And Succumbs To A Publishing Deal

Pippa Breaks The Family Agreement And Succumbs To A Publishing Deal

Ben Delicious writes from London: Is anyone surprised that Pippa Middleton, younger sister of Kate Middleton, couldn’t find the strength to stick to the family’s cunning plan of making tonnes of money a year after Katie’s wedding? I am for one surprised. Yep, you might not know this, but before the royal wedding the Middletons had held a secret meeting and decided they would refrain from using their new found status to enrich themselves for a year, starting from the date Katie became an honest woman. So a secret agreement was written and every member of the family signed it with the blood of sacrificed Kentucky Fried Chicken, to make it all more exciting and a tad sinister. The family held out for six longs months, making a few quid here and there, but refusing to get involved in big...

To Hell With Osborne’s Budget Statement. He’s Gets It Wrong All The Time Anyway

To Hell With Osborne’s Budget Statement. He’s Gets It Wrong All The Time Anyway

Adam Lovejoy writes from London: As you prepare for a tsunami of worthless analysis of Chancellor George Osborne’s autumn budget statement by hacks, who know s..t about the economy and pretty much everything else, let’s ignore it completely, with all its meaningless projections, and look at the bigger picture. For those of you, who think that we are being too harsh with George, look up his last year’s autumn statement and see how he got it all wrong and you will lose the interest to find out how he’s going to get it all wrong again. (the big theme this year is more nursery places for children that is supposed to help the recovery – how stupid is that?) So, let’s instead turn our attention to the big picture that George is missing completely: Britain would benefit from the euro...

President Obama’s Secret Weapon: A Witches’ Coven

Martin McCauley writes from Colorado: I am sitting on my haunches in a circle with Air Force officers. We are gazing at a set of stones arranged in asymmetric fashion. Why are we here? This is now part of military training for budding officers of the mighty US Air Force. The goal is to get everyone to connect to their primeval past. In so doing they will suddenly acquire the secrets of the pre-modern world. In simple language, we are all being trained as witches and wizards. Eat your heart out Harry Potter fans. America separates state and religion. Just how do you define a religion? Well, apparently any bright spark can invent one or simply look up an encyclopaedia and reinvent one. It must have something to do with the Harry Potter mania which is sweeping the planet. As some of the Harry...

The Leveson Inquiry Is An Indictment Of The Stupidity Of Newspaper Readers First And Foremost

R.F.Wilson writes from London: It’s really hard to imagine how Lord Justice Leveson, who is presiding over the inquiry into the ethics of the British press, is going to salvage the proceedings that have descended into a total farce, compliments of dimwitted celebs who have testified at its hearings. The choice of most witnesses, who have given evidence to the inquiry, has basically wiped out any chance of anyone treating this exercise seriously. Lord Leveson may be a good judge, but he sure got taken for a ride by people, who represent celebs and semi-celebs and and everything possible to get them some free publicity. What on earth were mediocre actor Hugh Grant and so-called comedian Steve Coogan doing on the witness stand at Leveson inquiry anyway? How is it that they represent the voice...

Brave New World Of Adultery. In The Age Of Hi-Tech Communications

Brave New World Of Adultery. In The Age Of Hi-Tech Communications

Adam Lovejoy writes from Amsterdam:First of all ladies, married or in a committed relationship: if your hubby or partner tells you that he’s going on business to Amsterdam on a Friday or Saturday, rest assured that he is planning a seriously dirty weekend. No one in his right mind does any business in Amsterdam. It’s the sex capital of Europe and people come here to have intercourse with prostitutes and maybe smoke some dope. Nothing else. Anyway, no that this is out of the way, spare a thought for people, who were committing adultery in the days when mobile phones and the Internet were still non-existent and the outdated views on marriage were hampering the desire of some brave men and women to share their love and passion out of wedlock or a committed relationship. It wasn’t...

More Pearls Of Wisdom. From The Boys At Stirring Trouble

Today we present more humorous pearls of wisdom and witty observations from the boys at Stirring Trouble. On all sorts of subjects, mostly politics and sex. Instead of helping to negotiate solutions in the Middle East the UN approves idiotic resolutions that only make things worse. Useless lot! Regime change in Syria look certain now. All the main components are in place, including the propaganda and the eager to please the West United Nations. The Soviet media’s main purpose was to prove to its readers that though they lived in shit it was still better shit than other people had. Western media is slowly getting there. President Obama will bring down the American economy with no problems. He’s a natural. Hillary Clinton proved to be a disastrous Secretary of State. Everywhere in the world...

Comedians Giving Money Men An Easy Ride. It’s A Disgrace!

Ben Delicious writes from London: With the money men continuing to rip off everyone by gambling away and misusing billions of taxpayers’ money, with the politicians protecting them, the only way left to get at the bankers is to mock and ridicule them. And who better to do that than comedians of all shapes and sizes. Especially as most comedians always tell us that they take a strong stand against vested interests and big business and blah, blah, blah. That’s how they are, you see. They are independent minded people, who are prepared to laugh at anything and anyone. God? No problem. The Queen and the Royal Family? Any time. Marriage and family? Just you say the word. It’s all about freedom of expression and artistic integrity, innit? I’ve been hearing a lot recently...
