War In Afghanistan Proves That The Era Of Western Imperialism Is Over
February 3, 2012
Martin McCauley writes from Kabul: The worst kept secret about the war in Afghanistan is out: a classified NATO report from senior officers in Afghanistan - State of the Taliban – has concluded that the Pakistanis have been aiding and abetting the insurgents all along. The Pakistani Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) agency has been running the Taliban since its inception. They have also been working with al Qaeda and other terrorist groups to destabilise Afghanistan.
So, where do these revelations leave the international force? High and dry. The dismal conclusion is that the blood, sweat and tears devoted to that unhappy country have been a colossal waste of time and money. ‘Why are we here?’, one can hear the NATO commanders asking themselves. The answer is very simple: ‘We should never have been here in the first place’.
NATO generals and politicians have spun a happy tale. The Taliban have been militarily crushed and victory was around the corner. True, the Taliban have concluded that they are no match for the firepower of the Allies. Instead, they lay improvised explosive devices (IEDs) at the roadside to kill or main anyone who is near. If they have conceded military victory, why then are they preparing to take over Afghanistan? They have changed their objectives. The venal Afghan administration has alienated large swathes of the population. The Taliban have stepped in to provide almost corruption-free local rule. They have even moderated their hostility towards women and miscreants.
The report laments that Western values such as democracy, free elections, the market economy, human and women’s rights and secularism are so alien to Afghans that they don’t give them a second thought. They are foreign imports and irrelevant to the development of the country.
So the billions expended on trying to force the above values down Afghan throats have been utterly wasted. Afghanistan does not and will not become a pale version of a Western society.
The realisation has dawned on the military that ISI is their foe not their ally. It wishes to destabilise President Karzai’s government because it suspects him of being pro-Indian. A Taliban government, with strings being pulled in Islamabad, would suit Pakistan just fine. It would also suit China. It also doesn’t want Indian and Western influence to grow there.
So what should be done? Get out as quickly as possible. This will save lives, not to mention bucketfuls of money. The world has changed. The era of imperialism is over. It is no longer possible to occupy a Muslim country and turn it into a mini-version of a Western state. Hopefully this conclusion will save lives in the future.
