R.F.Wilson writes from London: Spare a thought for all the lefties in Britain who are terrified at the mere thought that their beloved BBC might go down if the paedophilia cover-up scandal involving the late Jimmy Savile gets out of control. Oh the sleepless nights, the horrible anticipation that other big names might get sucked into the scandal, the horrible possibility that the Beeb will be investigated in earnest for its promiscuous practices and left-wing bias. And there’s also the unthinkable: the idea that pressure would grow to privatise the Corporation that would result in the Left losing its mouthpiece that is so conveniently funded by the public – against its will of course..
Yes, it’s a tough time to be a leftie in Britain. The convenient arrangement of having an in-house broadcaster that has been plugging left-wing propaganda for decades and meddled in politics for the past twenty years, keeping Labour in power for 13 long ‘glorious’ years, is in danger of collapsing. A nightmarish scenario for any true blooded progressive.
And it gets worse: if the BBC falls as a left-wing bastion after its privatisation the progressives may suffer a collapse altogether, as all the left-wing organs of print in Britain are loss-making and can’t be relied on to spread the message to the masses.
Mind you, the damage limitation has already started. The BBC itself is not really giving the subject a lot of prominence, unlike, for example, the phone hacking scandal that featured prominently on all of its news programmes. The Corporation’s execs are denying that they knew anything about Savile shagging underage groupies, even though the word about it was on and off for decades.
Feminists who usually go apeshit when they hear about abuse of women are staying quiet about the scandal at the BBC. They don’t want to rock the boat, you see. Some of them even call on everyone not to get carried away and keep a cool head, the bloody hypocrites!
And then there’s the eerie silence of all the other stars who had been working alongside Jimmy. How come they are saying nothing? Don’t they understand, these overpaid creeps, that by keeping silent they are basically saying that they knew about it and maybe even took part in some of the action? Already we have learned that two other people have been raping underage girls in Jimmy’s dressing room. So the list of culprits will grow.
And that is exactly what the BBC execs are mostly worried about: that the scandal will spread and the Omerta that exists at the Corporation – when not a single whistle blower has ever emerged to reveal some of the exciting things that are going on across the Corporation – will fade. But if someone steps forward, disgusted by the paedophilia cover-up, the wall of silence that has always surrounded the Corporation might get pierced and a possible flood of revelations may sweep the Beeb away.
But one thing lefties should not be worried about: that the privatisation of the BBC will happen any time soon. The current lot in power are all liberals or wets and they’d never dream of even raising the issue of dismantling the publicly funded broadcasting empire. And if Labour comes to power, then the BBC is safe for another ten years or so.
Still, its nice to see lefties panicking. Brings out the worst in them. Always does.
