R.F.Wilson reports from Cardiff: What the hell’s wrong with the second in line to the British throne? He comes to Anglesey in Wales, where he spent three years as a search and rescue pilot, to supposedly say goodbye to the locals, and address the people gathered at an agricultural show, reading every bloody word from the prepared script. Even the bit about his son Prince George being very good looking.
Is Prince William too terrified of saying something that his aides would disapprove of? I thought he was his own man and laid down the rules, like he did with the birth of his son when his in-laws were the first to visit the new-born baby before the royals were allowed to take a peek at him. But if so, why does he cling to his notes like President Barack Obama always does, worried that he might not find the words to express his feelings and thoughts.
It’s bad enough watching politicians read from the prepared script all the time, terrified of revealing something that should be kept secret from their people or being too stupid and inarticulate to say something off the cuff, but to see the future king sticking to the script religiously is just appalling. He is supposed to have received a first class education, even though he only managed history of art and geography in university, but failing to speak in public without notes is just pathetic. Especially when he talks about his family and praises his son. Does he by any chance talk to his wife at home reading from a script? As in: ‘Good morning, darling. It’s such a beautiful day outside. Do you feel like a walk or shag?’
Prince William’s PR people obviously have total control over him. They tell him what to do and what to say. He’s obviously too scared to make a mistake and say something that might be construed as politically incorrect. It just beggars belief that the second in line to the throne is terrified of his own subjects to such an extent that he is ready to look a total fool in front of so many people. Because people in the public eye do look ridiculous when they read everything from notes written by others. And please, don’t tell me that the Prince supposedly writes his own speeches. That won’t wash with me.
Kate Middleton, aka the Duchess of Cambridge, is no better. At her public engagements she always looks like a frightened rabbit, reading her lines without straying for a single moment. Even George Bush strayed and he wasn’t exactly very bright, now was he? You can’t weasel yourself into the Royal Family and then continue behaving like a total commoner. That’s demonstrating disrespect for the people around you and the nation itself.
Since Prince William married Kate, there was not a single occasion when one of them said anything of any interest in public, sticking to smiling insincerely and lacking any charm or charisma. If these two are the future king and queen of Britain, we might just as well get rid of the whole arrangement, to avoid more embarrassment.
