Dan Majestic reports from Fort Lee in New Jersey: Forget the Benghazi cover-up, the Inland Revenue Service pestering conservative groups before the last presidential election and the Justice Department rough handed treatment of some hacks from the Associated Press, to name but a few. A new gigantic scandal has hit America, New Jersey actually, where Governor Chris Christie, a possible Republican contender for the presidency in 2016, is fighting for his political survival, if you believe the wide-eyed hacks from the free and impartial US media.
Yep, the ‘lane closure scandal’, as it has been dubbed here, makes all the controversies that have hit the Obama Administration look small and irrelevant. What’s pulling US troops out of Iraq and turning it into a hellhole, losing the war in Afghanistan or sending drones and killing several hundred civilians by mistake compared to closing two, yes, two, lanes on the road that leads from the fine metropolis of Fort Lee to the George Washington Bridge, which in turn connects New Jersey with New York City? That’s the really big one, a hurricane of a political scandal, a ‘Watergate’ multiplied by ten times, which makes Guantanamo Prison remaining open look like a storm in a very small tea cup.
And it gets even more dramatic. One of the impartial organs of print has unearthed a family, which had lost its Grandma last September during the ‘lane closure controversy’, with the ambulance failing to arrive within minutes. The family says that it was time for Granny to go really anyway, being frail and ill and all that, and that they don’t blame anyone, but stern-faced hacks would hear none of this and kept the pressure on Governor Christie.
The scandal with the lane closures has already claimed the scalps of three officials from the governor’s office – yes, three – and forced Christie to apologise to the people of Fort Lee and to its mayor, who was supposedly the target of the devilish scheme to restrict the traffic flowing from Fort Lee, making his life hell for its inhabitants. To punish, if you’re confused, the mayor for not endorsing Mr Christie during his last year’s election campaign. How evil is that?
But seriously, closing two lanes on a road out of three is not something that people take lightly. It can cause a crisis, a war even. It can alter the state of things way beyond some junction or a bridge.
If only Mr Christie were a Democrat then things would have been so much easier for him. In fact, no one would have even noticed that the lanes were shut or, even if they were, everyone would have accepted it as a necessary measure, to make the road safer and more consumer friendly and, darn it, more beautiful. Just look at the way the US impartial free media is looking the other way when it comes to President Obama, a Democrat, and his oversights. I mean, the man doesn’t even have a proper birth certificate to prove that he’s eligible for the presidency. Not to mention lots of other things, like that dodgy Nobel Peace Prize, those close relatives who turned out to be illegal immigrants and that recent shutdown of the US government. Nothing, nothing can spoil the fascination of the truly unbiased American media with Mr Obama.
Still, all things considered, closing two lanes of a three lane road is pretty crazy and very dangerous. Not something that a man tipped as a possible future president could be seen as condoning. And what if he turns out to be religious or not approving of gay marriage? Better cut him off now, before he gets ideas of winning the White House.
