China Joins The Antarctic Club. The Race To Find Natural Resources Is On

By Martin McCauley: It would probably surprise many readers to learn that China now regards itself as a big player in… Antarctica. The icebreaker and research boat Xue Long (Snow Dragon) left Shanghai on October 25 for a six-month stint in the waters surrounding the sixth continent. The objective is to set up China’s first inland research station, the Kunlun Station. The station will be located on the Antarctic icecap itself. The other two Chinese stations are on the periphery of Antarctica. Kunlun will accommodate 20 research scientists and is planned to be completed in January 2009. Many countries are expressing an interest in Antarctica because of its supposed vast mineral and hydrocarbon wealth.
